Mark Logan, director at Showsec, joined the “Weather – Or Not” debate which explored safety standards following the stage collapse tragedies this summer. The panel was mediated by Andy Lenthall, general manager at Production Services Association, and featured fellow festival industry leaders including Live Nation UK COO John Probyn, Hedwig De Meyer from Stageco and Simon James from The Event Safety Shop.

Mark drew on personal experience, to discuss how thorough contingency plans, site-wide monitoring processes and incorporating external agencies are vital to diminish threats posed by adverse weather events.

14,000 more security staff for London Olympics PDF Print E-mail

14000 additional security staff for london olympicsThe cost of providing security for the London Olympics has risen by £271 million following a decision to recruit and train almost 14,000 more personnel.

The London 2012 organising committee (LOCOG) will now need nearly 24,000 venue security personnel plus specialist security equipment.

According to the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) the decision to increase the number of security staff from 10,000 to 23,700 was not in response to "any specific security threat".

Olympics minister Hugh Robertson said that the additional spending would not put the Games over their £9.3 billion budget, because of savings of more than £910 million achieved by the Olympic Delivery Authority since 2007.

He previously held senior positions at ITE and Expomedia Group plc, where he launched and managed exhibitions in the UK as well as in international territories.

Karim Halwagi said: “I am incredibly excited to be joining the AEO and am looking forward to working with our existing and new members, to further enhance and develop the promotion of our industry, and its continued growth.”

Temporary Structures Industry Weathering StormTemporary structures contractors had mixed fortunes in 2010 but fared better than the wider events industry, and the sector is gearing up for further growth over the next year, according to a recent survey of MUTA members.

The survey indicates that the temporary structures industry bucked the trend in the wider events sector, which experienced an overall contraction of 13% over 2010 according to the UK Events Market Trends Survey 2011.

Fortunes across the temporary structures industry varied; while two fifths of MUTA hirers (40%) saw little change in their turnover between 2009 and 2010, one in four (26%) were hit by falling revenues in 2010. But only 13% of manufacturers experienced a fall in sales in the same period, suggesting that companies opted to invest in upgrading their kit as a sluggish economy struggled out of recession.
